Control-M Web Access : SelfService vs APS Manager

Post by ctmnews » 15 Sep 2017 12:07

Control-M SelfService vs. APS Manager

You want to follow the scheduled processes with Control-M from a WEB page.
Give users the means to follow their treatments, re-launch them, or be able to order the jobs they want.

Two tools are available today for this.
SelfService, from BMC Software, accompanying Control-M,
and APS Manager from APS Enterprise, product editors complementary to the Schedulers, such as Control-M, TWS, UC4.

But what are the differences between these two tools?
We will list here, the commonalities, the complementary benefits, and what to do to use them.

Commonalities :
SelfService as APS Manager, enable:
- Tracking of jobs mounted on the plan (AJF)
- The visibility in line or graphical mode of the processing chains
- The ability to see the properties of jobs on the plan
- Visibility of Control-M logs and SYSOUT (or OUTPUT)
- The tracking of file transfers carried out with the Control Module MFT (Managed File Transfer V9)
- LDAP-related authentication

Additional benefits:
SelfService does not offer any additional benefits that APS Manager is able to provide.
However, APS Manager offers several possibilities:
- DefView, allowing to access them Jobs defined, their properties, with a graphical view or table
- CalView to view Calendars
- ServiceView for a macro monitoring by grouping jobs through filters that the user can define.
- AlarmView to access error messages sent to the Control-M console
- But also functions available to each user, such as the ability to:
- define columns and display options
- to filter on many criteria the jobs to be displayed
- access the result by an encrypted, secured URL, without connecting to the console
- to access an RSS feed on the Alarms filters, to be alerted from any RSS reader (browser, mobile, etc.)
- extract the graphic views into jpeg or png images
- extract the result displayed in html document, or csv
- to automatically send these reports by mail or to archive them
- integrate this report generation through a job in a control-M chain
- But also the possibility to control Control-M servers without access to the server itself:
- Can access jobs to plan if the Enterprise Manager is down
- Allows administration tasks, for configuration, shutdown / restart of Control-M servers and their bases.
- Managing server-related agents
- Managing Userdaily
- Accessing the information and their uses, the Control-M variables, the Conditions, the Resources, etc ...

Their uses:
The installation
SelfService must be installed and configured with each Enterprise Manager.
APS Manager requires only one installation, and common access for all Enterprise Manager

Configuration of the Services
With SelfService, the visibility of jobs requires many steps of administration, to be rehired on each environment,
creation of services, parameterization of accounts and access rights to these services, management of rights to the operation (order, hold, free, etc.)

With APS Manager, account management is simplified and common to each environment.
The user can define his own filters, his display.

The impact on the Control-M architecture
SelfService is a component related to the existing architecture, and its use can adversely affect the performance of the Enterprise Manager
and those clients.
APS Manager has its own architecture, and only regularly extracts the information from Control-M before making it available.

The cost
APS Manager is undoubtedly less expensive than SelfService, whatever the type of license envisaged.
